The Vancouver Park Board voted Monday to ban on any new cetaceans from being housed at the Vancouver Aquarium.
The board voted 6-1 to amend its bylaws to ban new dolphins, whales or porpoises — including sick or injured ones — at the aquarium, which drew a record 1.2 million visitors last year.
The simmering issue of whales in the aquarium reached a boiling point following the deaths of belugas Aurora, 30, and Qila, 21, nine days apart in November because of an unidentified toxin.
We want to know what you think:
Do you agree with the cetacean ban at the Vancouver Aquarium?
Yes – keeping whales, dolphins and porpoises in tanks is inhumane. No – the ban is an attack on research and will force rescuers to euthanize animals that can’t be released back into the wild.
